Frequently Asked Questions

How do i know I have Lymphedema?

Signs and symptoms vary and may depend on things like a family history or recent injury. The best way to know for certain is to have your doctor refer you to a Certified Lymphedema Therapist for an evaluation. Your doctor can also order specific studies and imaging to get a deeper look into your lymphatic system.

Common symptoms include: increased swelling at the end of the day, but that swelling subsides after rest or elevations; tight fitting clothes or jewelry on one arm/leg but not the other; tightness and heaviness from the swelling; volume difference between arms/legs of more than 1.5 centimeters circumference.

Can children have lymphedema or just adults?

Babies have shown evidence of lymphedema in the womb during ultrasound, so the answer is yes. The lymphatic system forms during the 5th week of pregnancy, and some babies have swelling in utero. Other can develop swelling shortly after birth or even after a few years.

Early intervention is important so contact your pediatrician as soon as you notice signs of swelling. If your pediatrician does not have the experience to diagnose, KEEP LOOKING, search out a second opinion. Brylan’s Feat Foundation is a free resource for pediatric lymphedema,

Will insurance cover compression garment costs?

As a CLT myself I have had success with some insurance policies covering compression garments and pneumatic compression pumps for home use. It is rare for an insurance policy to cover compression bandaging supplies, but you can likely use your HSA (Health Saving Account) if you have one through your employer to cover those costs. If you are seeking treatment by a Licensed Massage Therapist who is a Certified Lymphedema Therapist they can help you in additional ways through your HSA, or billing your insurance,

Is there a cure for Lymphedema?

At this time there is not a medication that I am aware of that has been approved to treat or cure lymphedema. I believe it will be an option in the future though!

Current research by Dr. Wei Chen shows promising curative results through microvascular surgery. Check out his article linked on the resources page, and listen to his episode that will come out in early 2021.

How am i going to make it through this?

One day at a time. Seek out others who are on this journey too. Instagram and Facebook are great resources for virtual support. Find a group and post an introduction of yourself, you will be surprised at the warm welcome you will receive,

What should I do after I have bene diagnosed with lymphedema?

Begin treatment with a Certified Lymphedema Therapist. To find one near you please visit the resources page linked at the top of this page.

What cellulitis?

Cellulitis is an infection in the skin that can become worse in a short amount of time. Contact your primary care physician as soon as possible or go to your nearest emergency center. Cellulitis must be treated with an oral antibiotic or fluid IV. Topical creams will not help.
